How to Choose a Wedding DJ: 8 Things to Check
Your DJ shapes how the whole reception feels. Use this checklist to compare options with confidence.
1. Ask how they plan the night
A good DJ asks about your venue, guests, timeline and music before quoting. If the first conversation is only about price, keep looking.
2. Listen to real sets
Ask for mixes or video of a past event. You are listening for smooth transitions, a good range of music and a sense of how they manage energy.
3. Confirm the equipment
Ask what sound system is provided, whether it suits your room and guest count, and whether wireless microphones and backup gear are included.
4. Check the MC style
Some couples want an energetic host. Others want almost no talking. Make sure the DJ can do what you want and tell them clearly.
5. Share a must-play and do-not-play list
Good DJs welcome this. Keep the must-play list focused, and be specific about songs you never want to hear.
6. Read the contract
Look for the date, times, location, total price, deposit, cancellation terms and what happens if the DJ is ill. Everything should be in writing.
7. Ask about the venue
Power, load-in access and noise rules vary. An experienced DJ will ask about these early.
8. Trust communication
Fast, clear replies before booking are a good sign for how things will go on the day.
